Sex steroids and puberty

We have shown that it is possible to determine the serum concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in children and developed biological reference ranges. This is the basis for most research projects, both nationally and internationally, where there is now a unique opportunity to identify sex hormone levels in children with various conditions.

The sensitive analytical methods and reference materials have made it possible to take a more physiological way to induce puberty in children. Our research team introduced the method today is the norm in Sweden; to deal with parts of transdermal estradiol patch only during the night. The major advantage compared to oral synthetic estrogens is to first liver passage is avoided and the estradiol levels mimic those found during spontaneous puberty.

Ongoing studies:

  • The relationship between sex steroids and growth during puberty
  • Pubertal disorders
  • Estradiol before thelarche
  • New treatment regimen for Turner girls
  • The use of testosterone transdermal patches, gel and intramuscular injection during pubertal replacement therapy / induction of puberty
  • Steroids, puberty and bone mineralization
  • Puberty and risk of obesity
  • The relationship between ADH and sex steroid secretion
